Highland Controls has worked on diverse projects for companies in Northern Ohio (including Cleveland and Akron), Western Pennsylvania, Northeast Indiana, and Southeast Michigan. Here are a few:

Cut-to-length Drives Replacement

Worked with another integrator to replace DC drives on an aging Herr-Voss line with ABB AC drives. This upgrade included the installation of a 100HP ABB ACSM1 motion drive to index steel strip for cutting. This is a 7 gauge line (72″ wide) capable of running at 200FPM (350FPM peak speed for indexer).

Automated Optical Inspection of Hard Disk Drive Components
Specified hardware and software for a series of custom machines that visually inspect components that go into computer hard disk drives.  Completely integrated motion and vision.  Other than loading and unloading, the process is completely automatic.  Bar codes are scanned, the wafer is located, and more than a thousand parts are inspected per run.  Inspection results for each part are recorded and turned into a “wafer map” for another machine to pick the desired parts from.  Overall results are written to a network SQL database.  Programmed using LabVIEW.

Custom Czochralski and Bridgman Crystal Growth Furnaces
Full system integration for automated crystal growth, including active diameter control and critical growth data logging.  Specified hardware and software for a series of custom furnaces.  Developed custom program that integrates a multi-axis motion controller, temperature controllers, and a weight controller.  Completely programmed using LabVIEW.

Automated Testing and Marking Machine
Developed a custom machine that electrically tests a tray full of parts, then marks the parts with a Videojet ink jet printer.  Completely automated process other than loading and unloading.  Integrated motion controller, impedance analyzer, and printer using LabVIEW.

Autonomous Vehicle
Competed in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge as team BJB Engineering.  Converted a standard Isuzu Trooper into an autonomous vehicle.  Integrated motion controllers, lasers, ultrasonic sensors, radar, and GPS using LabVIEW.  The vehicle could drive itself (no remote control) and avoid obstacles.  Read story here.
