ABB BSM N Series

BSM means Brushless Servo Motor. The “N” stands for Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnetics,
which is a very refined rare earth magnetic technology. When ABB produces this
Baldor design, what all these acronyms mean for your project is extremely low
inertia, very high torque ratios and acceleration suitable for the world’s
fastest machines. The result for you is faster positioning and faster transit
than the competition.

The N-series is available in five IEC frame sizes, with available NEMA
mounting, and continuous stall torque ratings ranging from 0.45 N-m (3.9 Lb-In)
to 40 N-m (354 Lb-In). Even torque numbers like those don’t tell the whole
story. These motors have some of the lowest inertial mass available on the
market, to provide maximum torque in a design envelope of this size. Peak
torque ratings are 4 times the continuous ratings, for blistering speed in
burst-mode operations, as well as consistently high torque at low speeds,
providing extremely fine control for machine processes. This also means that
PLCs and intelligent servo drives are capable of maximizing energy efficiency,
continuing to save money over the life of the part.

These motors are extremely rugged, durable, and efficiently packaged. They are
of the highest quality design and construction, featuring precision wrapped,
lightweight rotors and windings built for extreme temperature resistance to 200
degrees C, with a thermal switch to protect from overheating damage. The
windings are further equipped with potentiometers to protect the stator from
voltage spikes, improving reliability, heat protection and heat transfer.
Bearings greased with Exxon PolyRex®EM polyurea grease mean up to four times
longer life, as well as greater shear durability.

ABB’s BSM N Series motors are moisture resistant, 95 percent non-condensing and
sealed to IP60 rating. The optional shaft seal rates the motors at IP65. Some
models have cooling kits available, and all feature a variety of feedback
options, including resolvers, Hall sensors, incremental and absolute encoders.
Some also offer optional brakes.
